Here’s what we want you to learn with us;

– How to plan your content so you show up consistently and share your images and words in the most useful way possible.
– Writing captions/posts/newsletter copy that builds community and understanding around what you do.
Format
Morning session 10-1pm, photography with Lean:
- Photography basics and working with natural light. For those with DSLR cameras we will talk you through getting started with manual settings. Smartphones are fine too.
- Lifestyle storytelling through imagery: utilising both styled scenes and Lean’s ‘capturing a sense of place’ framework
- Editing your images
- We will break into groups towards the end of the photography session and set up a variety of styled scenes (working with the products/produce you bring along). Sophie and Kate will be on hand to help with this too.

Afternoon session 2-4pm
Content planning, how to show up consistently, writing tips, Instagram posting (stories and feed) hacks and tips with Sophie (and the others!). Then a Q&A to finish.
4pm
We wrap things up by the fire pit with some nibbles and a glass or two of beautiful Collector wines.
Your hosts/teachers
Lean Timms is a freelance travel, lifestyle and food photographer working across editorial, commercial, publishing and content creation fields. Currently based on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country in Canberra, Lean divides her work between her local community, throughout Australia and (pre-covid) around the world. Forever exploring and full of curiosity, Lean’s greatest love is to discover and document unique and inspiring places and stories. Lean’s approach to photography is driven by natural light, in situ spontaneity, considered composition, storytelling, and capturing and sharing a genuine sense of place.
Sophie Hansen (me!) is a cook and author and lives with her family on their deer farm just outside of Orange in country New South Wales. She has been blogging and sharing her story on Instagram for over a decade now and is a big believer in the power of these platforms to build strong communities around the things we do and make. This workshop is a part of the event program for the launch of her third cookbook In Good Company and her second cookbook, A Basket by the Door is in its fourth reprint and widely distributed around the world. Sophie writes, styles and shoots her books and posts herself and has lots to share when it comes to visual storytelling.
Kate McKay is a ceramicist and our host for the day! Her studio woodshed will be our venue and we are so lucky! It’s not only a wonderful space but Kate’s beautiful ceramic pieces will be on hand as the ultimate prop collection. Kate graduated from Art School in 1997, and has continued her ceramics practice since, focussing on simple domestic and tableware. Growing up in a family involved in hospitality and restaurants, her work reflects a deep reflective interest in the ability of hand-made and well-considered plates, bowls and cups to elevate the elemental nature of sharing food and drink to something beyond the merely functional.

Venue
Southern Wild Co’s Shedquarters, Rocklea NSW (20 mins from Oberon, 35 mins from Bathurst).
Your hosts
Tania Robinson is Creative Director of Southern Wild Co (next level scented candles), a scent-seeker and lover of the wild Australian landscape with a background in art direction and branding. Her famous ’shedquarters’ studio space (which appears in Sophie’s new book) will be our venue for the day.
Sophie Hansen is a food writer and author of brand new book In Good Company. She also teaches visual storytelling and is all about the power of weaving words and photos working together to tell useful and inspiring stories that build communities around whatever it is we do/make/are.
The workshop
In the first half of the workshop, Tania and Sophie will cover branding 101 – nutting out how you want people to ‘feel’ when they interact with you online, in person, your product and how to use your words and images together to convey/create exactly that feeling. We’ll also start everyone out with a content plan that will really help ensure our feeds/newsletters/blogs/whatever are consistent and as inspiring and valuable as possible for our communities.
In the second half we’ll get to work, styling and shooting (with your DSLR or smartphone camera) a variety of scenes with Tania and Sophie on hand to ensure everyone walks away with a camera roll full of gorgeous pics and the skills to keep creating them at home.
Then we’ll wrap up with a glass or two of bubbles and a bit of a debrief and Q&A around the fire.
Notes on making this a really lovely weekend away
Rocklea is about three hours from Sydney, over the Blue Mountains. It’s a really pretty part of the world and we think that if you gathered another creative buddy (or two or three), and made this workshop part of a whole weekend away, well, that would be pretty great. Here are a few BNB’s in the area that we have heard are great (we haven’t stayed there as we live in or near the area ourselves). Otherwise, you could base yourself in the Blue Mountains, perhaps Blackheath (?) and drive the one hour to the workshop and back again for the evening. You do you.
Airbnbs not far from Rockley;
Bimlow Cottage
Home Farm Cabin
The Sloe Hare
Tara Cottage
And there are rooms at the Rockley Pub
